This form of iris is found throughout the
tropical
regions of
South America. It is called
walking iris because the flower stalks bend
over, touch the ground and take root. Jesus
had 12 apostles and, it is believed that the
plants will not flower until they have 12
leaves.
It blooms in
the spring and the plants reach a height of
3 feet or more. Like
Hemerocallis (daylilies), the
fragrant flowers only last one day before
fading.
Walking iris
needs a steady supply of water. They do well
next to ponds and waterways.
