The autumn flowered
Damask
rose was crossed with strains of the
China
rose to produce Portland Roses. They
resemble
Bourbon roses with stronger colors in
pink, red or purple and often smaller
flowers. The plants are not very hardy.
After being introduced
into
England in the 18th century, this group
of roses was named after the Duchess of
Portland. They have never gained great
popularity and are rare in the garden.
