This sport of H. 'Subcrocea' was
registered by
Anne Arett in 1975. The
medium size hosta forms a 12 inch tall mound
with a spread of about 28 inches. Its foliage is gold with a
white marginal variegation. The leaves are slightly wavy with
very thin substance. Pale purple flowers bloom in August. According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "In the 1980s, 'Anne Arett' was a fairly common sight in
most hosta collections, but fewer and fewer gardens have it on
display."
The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by
Diana
Grenfell (2009) states: "Not vigorous...One of the earliest introductions
with this coloring and now considered a collector's
plant...Leaf edge becomes less rippled with
maturity."
An article by Gwen Black from
England in
The
Hosta Journal (1997 Vol. 28 No. 2) answers the question, "Which
hosta makes the most outstanding golden dazzle in the early growth?...candidates
were: 'Goldsmith', 'Gold Haze', 'Platinum Tiara', 'Golden
Scepter', 'Sea Fire',
'Golden Oriole', 'Hadspen Samphire', 'Bizarre', 'Anne Arett' and 'Granary Gold'
and on this occasion the award went to H. 'Golden Oriole' with H. 'Granary Gold'
a close second."
