The shrubs in the following list are small and generally slow growing, with mature heights of 3 feet or less under normal growing conditions. The list does not include dwarf shrubs created by pruning and restricting root growth- such as container, bonsai, and topiary plants or by grafting. Dwarf shrubs are useful where garden space is at a premium and are excellent in foundation plantings, on steep banks, or as edging along drives, walks, borders, and beds. See page 23 for more on dwarf shrubs. An asterisk (*) indicates wide-spreading and rapid-growing shrubs that are suitable for ground covers.
