Hosta 'Kifukurin Ubatake'

aka H. pulchella 'Kifukurin Ubatake'

Registered by Peter Ruh of Ohio in 2002 and re-registered with new data in 2018 as a cultivar of unidentified parentage, Zilis (2009) feels that it is actually a sport of H. pulchella. It forms a miniature size (3.75 inches high by 6 inches wide) mound of medium green foliage with a creamy white marginal variegation. The leaves are narrowly ovate, slightly cupped, slightly folded, wavy and dull on top. Light purple flowers with stripes bloom on scapes 12 inches tall from mid-June into July followed by viable seeds in purplish green pods.

The registration materials state: "...small; slow..."

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...long standing cultivar from Japan... commonly listed as H. pulchella 'Kifukurin', but has been changed here to 'Kifukurin Ubatake' to distinguish it from other yellow-edged hosta cultivars identified as 'Kifukurin'."

Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled, A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term kifukurin or ki fukurin as yellow edge(d) or yellow margin(ed).
