Hosta 'Kifukurin Ko Mame'

A sport of 'Ko Mame', this cultivar which originated in Japan was registered by Peter Ruh of Ohio in 2002 and re-registered with new data in 2018. The miniature size (3.5 inches high by 7 inches wide) mounded plant with light to medium green foliage that has a thin creamy white marginal variegation. Its leaves are lanceolate, moderately wavy, slightly cupped, slightly folded, very shiny on the bottom and slightly shiny on top. Lavender flowers with white edges bloom from August into September on scapes 7 to 9 inches tall followed by viable seeds.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "More "nomen confusum"!!! The plant that has been sold as 'Kifukurin Ko Mame' has yellow margins that change to white. George Schmid (1991,p. 183) listed 'Kifukurin Ko Mame', but Kenji Watanabe... had already named this same form 'Fukurin Ko Mame' (thinking of it as a bordered plant, without reference to the margin color). Peter Ruh, however, found a form of 'Ko Mame' with yellow margins that hold and is the plant he registered in 2002."

The registration materials state: "...small size; marginated...P. Ruh wished to register as Fukurin Ko Mame (has references) but that name was already in the trade (didn't know if they were the same or not). Ruh agreed to register it as Kifukurin Ko Mame. Found on Kyushu Island in Japan."

In answer to a question about growing smaller hostas that appeared in The Hosta Journal (2012 Vol. 43 No. 2), W. George Schmid of Georgia, author of The Genus Hosta (1991) commented, "My favorite minis are H. venusta, H. gracillima, a white-margined sport of H. gracillima named 'Kifukurin Ko Mame', H. pulchella and 'Blue Mouse Ears' ."
