This
hybrid a hybrid of H. 'Aden
No. 270' × H. 'Aden
No. 275' from
Paul Aden of New York
and it was registered by him in 1976. It
forms a medium size (18 inches high) mound of heavily streaked foliage. It has
slightly wavy, smooth textured leaves that are very shiny
underneath. Bright purple flowers are borne from late July into mid-August.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), this cultivar "...has a significant place in hosta
history, both as a garden plant and in breeding programs...It
has a tendency to sport, so off type shoots need to be culled
frequently...It was one of the first streaked plants used by
hybridizers in the 1970s to produce variegated seedlings."
An article by C.H. Falstad about the stability of colors in hosta leaves in
The
Hosta Journal (2006 Vol. 37 No. 1) says, "The least
stable hostas tend to be those with streaked leaves...In September, 1982 I found
the first streaked forms of 'Krossa Regal'...Today, more than 20 years later,
most of those clumps remain predominately streaked...In comparison, I once owned
a plant of 'Yellow Splash'...Within a year or two, it turned entirely into
'Yellow Splash Rim'..."
