Hans Hansen and
Shady Oaks Nursery registered this
tissue culture sport of H. 'Guacamole' in 1999. A large size (20 inches high by 45 inches wide) plant, this cultivar has moderately wavy
and slightly corrugated foliage with above average substance. It bears fragrant,
pale lavender flowers on 2 to 3 foot tall scapes in August.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "This incredible plant improves on
'Guacamole', its mother plant, by a much brighter gold center. Its overall size
is smaller and the growth rate a bit slower, but that only matters when
comparing the two. At its peak in midsummer, the bright gold leaf center of
'Stained Glass' outshines just about any other
hosta cultivar making it an ideal
choice as a specimen plant (surround it with 'Guacamole'?)."
This cultivar
has appeared on several of the Popularity Polls by
members of The American Hosta Society (see below). It was the 2006 "Hosta of the Year" by the
American Hosta Growers Association.
In an article in
The
Hosta Journal (2016 Vol. 47 No 2), the author
described this plant's flowers as having a "Medium" fragrance compared to other
hostas.
