Hosta 'Spartan Glory'

This seedling of a seedling x H. 'Elatior' was registered by Dr. Jim Wilkins of Michigan in 2000. The large size (27 inches high by 62 inches wide), semi-upright plant has heavily corrugated, slightly cupped foliage with thick substance. It bears near white flowers on 49 inch tall scapes followed by viable seeds.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "This beautiful hybrid from Jim Wilkins nicely combines the best features of its parents."

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Grow in light woodland or as a specimen plant at the back of the border...The deeply furrowed veins which appear when the plant has matured."

Dr Jim Wilkins was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan whose nickname is the "Wolverines". However, some of his daughters attended the arch rival school, Michigan State University known as the "Spartans". Since he had already created a cultivar named H. 'Wolverine', this was a good way to maintain peace in the family, I suspect...and to create a beautiful hosta!
