Hosta 'Shere Khan'

Oops! Sure looks as if this big blue hosta is labeled as H. 'Shere Khan'. Unfortunately, the actual 'Shere Kahn' is an 8 inch high mound with 4 inch long leaves. We will try to get a true picture next summer.

In 1995, Wm Zumbar of Ohio registered this tissue culture sport of H. 'Just So'. The small size mound measures 8 inches high by 20 inches wide with pale lavender flowers borne in late June.

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states in its Hosta Hybrids for Connoisseurs chapter: "If sited in morning sun, the center of the leaves will turn golden yellow. Moderate growth rate...Very rare, but a gem for the collectors of smaller hostas."

There is also a cultivar named H. 'Hollywood Shere Khan'.

An article about H. 'Shere Khan' by Warren I. Pollock in The Hosta Journal (2012 Vol. 43 No. 1) states that it was, "Named for its tawny tiger-colored gold like the tiger in Kipling's Jungle Book."
