This is a green leaved,
tissue culture sport of
H. 'Masquerade' that was introduced by
Mark Zilis of Illinois and Q&Z Nursery in
2003. It forms a medium size (11 inches high)
mound and displays deep purple flowers from late June into July.
According to
The Hostapedia by
Mark Zilis
(2009), this cultivar "...makes a much
better garden plant than the white-centered 'Masquerade'. It can
be used as a low ground cover or edger. Much to my surprise, it
also exhibits good sun tolerance."
Q&Z Nursery closed in the fall of 2014.
An article by
Warren I. Pollock in
The
Hosta Journal (2009 Vol. 40 No. 1) states that, "It
turns out the green sport of 'Masquerade' was registered twice and with two
different names. In 1999
Van Wade...registered this sport as 'Vanessa'...Mark Zilis...informed me that he registered it as 'Munchkin' in 2003."
