Hosta 'Maui Buttercups'

This hybrid of H. 'Frances Williams' × H. 'August Moon' was registered by William Vaughn of Illinois in 1991 and is  part of the "Maui Series" of hostas. This medium size (12 inches high) mound of heavily corrugated, cupped leaves has near white flowers in July followed by viable seeds.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), this cultivar "...has achieved great popularity in recent years and rightly so...Its mature characteristics are not what you would expect from a cross of 'Frances Williams' x 'August Moon', two large size cultivars."

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Slow to establish but eventually has a moderate growth rate. A superb small yellow-leaved hosta having great presence in the garden...A noticeable hyaline (translucent) line around the leaf edge. Very large leafy bracts along the scape and around the raceme."

"A small, rounded, cup leaf of heavy substance and very waffled texture. Brilliant gold in color all season. A very compact plant in growing habit like a small 'Aspen Gold'. This is an absolute delight to see in any collection.

"I first spotted this cultivar in the Indiana garden of Bill Brincka and Basil Cross during the Michigan Hosta Society tour several years ago. With a beautifully rendered gold cupped leaf, the medium-sized plant forms a stunning clump. Available at Hatfield's for $125.00."
