This cultivar is the result of a cross of a streaked form of H. 'Christmas Tree' × H. 'Halcyon'. It was registered by Alex Malloy of New York in 2001. 'Hippodrome' grows into a medium size hosta about 15 inches in height with a spread of 39 inches. The leaves are rippled, convexly cupped and have thick substance. It bears near white flowers starting in mid-June.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...combines the best of both parents and makes a striking specimen plant. Particularly attractive is the neatly rippled, creamy yellow margin."

Hippodrome is a Greek word for a stadium where horse racing and related events are held.
