Hosta 'Gunther's Prize'

A slow growing, non-registered sport of H. 'Sum and Substance', this cultivar was discovered by Bob Solberg of Green Hill Farm in North Carolina. It has many of the same characteristics as its parent plant but with heavily mottled yellow, chartreuse and green foliage. The clump is a large size growing to 26 inches in height with a spread of around 56 inches. Its thick leaves are broadly oblong-ovate, deeply lobed at the base and have a distinct tip. Pale lavender flowers bloom from late July into August.

From the Field Guide to Hostas by Mark Zilis (2014), "This may be the most distinctive of all 'Sum and Substance' sports...It has been difficult to accurately produce by tissue culture."

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Divide regularly to retain the streaking. A much sought-after plant and still a rarity although some gardeners may wonder why. Slow to moderate increase...Large, randomly streaked leaves will always attract attention."
