A hybrid of H. 'Flamboyant' ×
H. 'Intrigue' was registered by
Paul Aden of New York in 1978. This is a
heavily variegated plant with leaves that have a dark green
center that consists of many streaks of yellow and creamy white
in mottled sections. The leaf margins are slightly wavy. Pale
lavender flowers bloom in July. According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "The original form was almost lost to collectors as its
white-centered sport, 'Gene's Joy', was widely sold as 'Gene
Summers' in the 1980s and early 1990s."
It
is my understanding that this plant was named after
Alex Summers' wife, Gene.
