Hosta 'Dream Queen'

Originated by Jan van den Top of the Netherland and registered on his behalf by Registrar, Gayle Hartley Alley for The American Hosta Society in 2020, this cultivar is a sport of H. 'Great Expectations'. It is a medium to large size hosta which grows to about 19 inches in high by 34 inches wide. The foliage is moderate blue-green (116B RHS Colour Chart) with light yellow-green (145B RHS Colour Chart) medial (center) variegation. Its leaves vary from broadly ovate to nearly round in shape. They are slightly cupped, slightly corrugated, moderately wavy and glaucous on top. Near white flowers with very pale lavender stripes bloom in June followed by viable seeds. The pale yellowish-green scapes have variegated bracts and stand 20 to 24 inches tall.

The registration materials state: "...Large upright clump of thick leaves hosts a third green color between the yellowish-green "flame-like" centers and the very wide blue-green margins...centers appear more white later in the season (close to 160C on the RHS Colour Chart). "

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), this cultivar "...differs from its mother plant in having a much wider blue-green margin; other characteristics should be similar to 'Great Expectations', including mound & leaf sizes and flowering habits."

An article by Warren I. Pollack in The Hosta Journal  (2020 Vol. 51 No. 1) titled Doppelgänger Hostas: Fancy Name for Look-alike Hostas, included a long list of hostas which various hostaphiles, published articles or other sources have indicated "look" the same. Some of these are, in fact, the same plant with two or more different names. Others are hostas that vary in some minor trait which is not immediately discernable to the casual observer such as seasonal color variations, bloom traits, ploidy, etc. So, as Warren mentions, hostaphiles may differ as to the plants listed but then, their opinions are based on visual observations and interpretations.

H. 'Dream Queen', H. 'Dream Weaver' and H. 'Thunderbolt'.
