This Tardiana-type hosta has dark blue-green foliage of thick substance. It was registered by the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society (BHHS) on behalf of the originator, Eric Smith in 1988.   This medium size (16 inches high) cultivar has slightly cupped and moderately corrugated foliage. It has pure white flowers that appear in July to early August followed by viable seeds.

According to The Hosta Handbook by Mark Zilis (2000), it was formerly known as "TF 2 X 30" and 'Hadspen White'.

The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009) states that this cultivar "...has always been my favorite Tardiana. It offers an attractive combination of blue foliage and white flowers."

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Among the bluest of the Tardiana Group."

An article about H. 'Brother Ronald' by Warren I. Pollock in The Hosta Journal (1995 Vol. 26 No. 2) states that, "...named for Eric Smith 's brother, Ronald by the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society. Brother Ronald was neither a monk or friar."
