This term usually applies to the typical lawn irrigations system comprised of a set of underground pipes with sprinklers scattered around the lawn. It is set on a timer to deliver the water at specific intervals throughout the week. Generally, these work great on turf.

However, they may not be as kind to nearby trees, shrubs and mixed beds and borders. If the system is set to properly care for the turfgrass, it may be delivering too much water for some of the other plants especially if the soils are poorly drained.
