Generally, vine plants will be planted in the same manner as either bare root or container grown perennials. However, there are a couple of other factors that need to be considered with ornamental vines.

Vines want to climb and the main reason for using them is to raise the height of the garden up into the air a bit. So, you will need to provide the support structure first before you plant the vine.

The type of support will depend on the way the plant grows. Some vines such as English ivy or Boston ivy and climbing hydrangea have aerial roots that latch on to the surface of bricks or wood. Clematis has a twining growth habit and will need something like chain link fence material or thin slatted trellis in order to climb.

Climbing roses are not technically vines. They are just roses that grow very long canes. They will need to have a support which will allow you to tie them up with twine or string.
