There is an old saying that we need to "stop and smell the roses" when we are stressed and need to relax. Well, plenty of other plants in our beds and borders can also emit very pleasant fragrances.

Perhaps tops on my list are the trumpet lilies (Lilium) which can have a very strong fragrance. Planting a few of these near walkways, deck or back porch can add significantly to the enjoyment of your garden. Certain hosta cultivars and such diverse plants as Rodgersia will also perfume the garden.

Here is a link to a "rookie's" list of plants that have fragrance in their flowers and/or foliage.

Note: We have provided some general information and observations on this topic aimed at the home gardener. Before you take any serious action in your landscape, check with your state's land grant university's Cooperative Extension Service for the most current, appropriate, localized recommendations.
