Many plant species were "discovered" by plant explorers in this region and were then introduced to the rest of the world. Along the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea the plants are often adapted to warm to hot and dry conditions. The eastern end of the sea is also known as Asia Minor.

Another region associated with the region would be called Southern Europe which might extend up into Spain, France, Northern Italy, etc.
