Dense, compact, conical or columnar in habit, becoming loose and open.
18-25 feet tall with a spread of 10-12 feet
Plants are monoecious. Cones are solitary and terminal.
 
Leaves are scale-like, smaller than Thuja occidentalis, about 1/12 inch long, triangular, ending in a blunt point, distinctly grooved on the back.
 
 
Branchlets are compressed into vertical sprays.
Cones are oval, fleshy, ½-¾ inch long, composed of 6 scales, each with a thorn-like projection, bluish in color before ripening.
