Clinging vine with aerial roots
6-8 inches tall, when used as a groundcover, growing 60 feet or more in height, with a spread of 20 feet when grown as a vine.
Flowers are greenish white, borne in rounded umbels, only on adult form.

Leaves are alternate, 1˝-4 inches long, evergreen, dark green and lustrous, dimorphic in shape, depending upon the age and height of plant.

Juvenile form - simple, entire, with 3-5 lobes and whitish veins. Adult form ('Arborescens') - simple, entire, rhombic or diamond shaped, without whitish veins.
 
 
 
Fruit is a small, black, berry-like drupe, ripening in April-May.
 
 
  • 'Variegata' - leaves edged with yellowish white
  • 'Albany' - erect and shrubby
  • 'Aureo­variegata' - leaves variegated yellow
  • var. baltica - one of the hardiest forms
  • 'Cavendishii' - leaf margin variegated - White to yellow
  • 'Conglomerata' - small leaves, stiff, upright stems
  • 'Erecta' - more erect in habit
  • 'Maculata' - leaves spotted or striped with yellowish white
  • 'Minima' - small lobed leaves, unstable habit
  • 'Pittsburgh' - lateral shoots appear in most of the leaf axils
  • 'Rumania' - similar to 'Bulgaria'
