Depending on the taxonomist, there are estimated to be between 90 and 127 species in this genus. This and the genus Cirsium are considered the "true thistles". Most of the species of Carduus are native to Eurasia and Africa. Some have become noxious weeds in other parts of the world where they have been introduced.
