Bob Solberg of Green Hill Farm in North Carolina registered this diminutive hosta in 1997. It is a
hybrid of H. 'Lemon Lime' × H. 'Shining Tot'. The
miniature size (5 inches high) plant has ovate shaped,
smooth textured leaves. Pale
purple flowers appear in late July on 14 inch tall scapes.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "Since its introduction, 'Shiny
Penny' has been recognized as one of the best dwarfs for the
shade garden. It makes a great edging plant, but can also be
planted in troughs."
