This cultivar is part of the "Sherborne
Series" of hostas from
Eric Smith. It is a second generation of Smith's famous
Tardiana seedlings (TF1 ×
1) × (TF1 × 4) and it was registered by the
British Hosta
and Hemerocallis Society on his behalf in 1988.
The dense mound grows
into a small size hosta about 10
inches in height with a spread of around 22 inches. It has a
slow growth rate and medium blue-green colored foliage. The
leaves are slightly rippled, slightly cupped, slightly wavy and
dull on top. Pale lavender flowers with light colored stripes
bloom in July but seed set was unknown at the time of
registration.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "As of 1992, Peter Ruh of Ohio owned the only plant of 'Sherborne
Swallow' in the United States. Since that time, a few others
have obtained it, but it is still rare. The largest specimen can
be found at Wade & Gatton Nurseries in Bellville, Ohio."
