Best known as the creator of the wonderful H. 'Tardiana' Group of blue hostas, British hybridizer Eric Smith (1917-1986) was also involved in the introduction of other hostas. He created the unique group when, one summer by a fluke of nature, he was able to cross the late season flowering species, H. tardiflora, with an out of season bloom on a H. sieboldiana. This rare combination resulted in a great group of blue hostas sharing some of the characteristics of both. This was done at Hadspen House in England which gave many of the resulting cultivars their name. Many of his creations were registered by either the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society (BHHS) or the American Hosta Society in his name after his death.
