Hosta 'Red Dragon'

This is a non-registered cultivar that is descended from H. 'Elp 2' originated by Ron Livingston of Michigan. It forms a medium size (13 inches high by 31 inches wide) arching mound of light green foliage. The leaves are deeply veined and have red petioles. Pale purple flowers held on black-purple scapes bloom in August.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "Of the thousands of hostas I viewed in 2007, this ranks near the top of my list of favorites...What I like about 'Red Dragon' is the way its spreading mound of light green foliage acts as a foil to the pendulous, richly colored scapes and purple flowers in late summer. For the most part, the scapes lie on the foliage at the peak of bloom, creating an effect seen in few hostas."

The Hosta Journal, (2006 Vol. 37 No. 2), in an article about flower characteristics stated that this cultivar has "...the bud is the surprise, resembling a dragon's head, and is quite unique..."
