This cultivar is a hybrid of H. 'Invincible' × H. 'Northern Halo' which was registered by
Greg Johnson of Iowa in
2004. It forms a large size (20 inches high by 48 inches wide) mound of blue-green foliage
which changes to green as the season progresses.
Near white flowers bloom from mid-July into August.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "It is widely considered to be the earliest
blooming, fragrant-flowered hosta."
The Hosta Journal, (2000 Vol. 31, No. 1) states that H. 'Moonlight
Sonata' is the earliest blooming of the fragrant hostas.
In an article in
The
Hosta Journal (2016 Vol. 47 No 2), the author
described this plant's flowers as having a "Very Weak"
fragrance compared to other hostas.
