Hosta 'Miss America' & 'Miss AmErica

This is one of those cases where there are two hostas with the same name. One is registered and, therefore, the "official" version of H. 'Miss America' while the other is a non-registered plant and needs to be renamed to avoid further confusion.

Registered by Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens, Inc. of Michigan in 2018, this cultivar is a seedling of H. 'American Sweetheart Streaked' × H. 'Elatior'. It is a large size hosta about 19 inches high by 55 inches wide with medium green foliage that has a white medial (center) variegation. The leaves are broadly ovate, relatively flat and dull on top. The petioles are also white with green edges. Pale lavender flowers bloom from July into August on scapes 55 to 61 inches tall but it does not set seeds.

The registration materials state: "...Forms a majestic clump with beautiful white centered leaves and wide green margins. Very attractive large lavender flowers top the clump on tall, straight flower stems...near white with lavender pattern in center of each petal."

Hosta Helper will call this plant 'Miss America' (Hans Hansen)

Originated by Traci Seltz from Granny T’s Gardens in Iowa, this non-registered cultivar is of unidentified parentage. It is a medium to large size hosta with dark blue-green foliage that has creamy yellow streaked variegation. The leaves are slightly wavy, slightly corrugated and bend forward at the tip.

We suspect that this name is to honor someone named Erica but there is also a registered cultivar named H. 'Miss America' which might cause some confusion...especially in a database.

Hosta Helper will call this plant 'Miss AmErica' (Seitz)
