Hosta 'Lucy's Breeder'

Lucille Simpers of Indiana originated this seedling of H. 'Snow Mound' which was registered on her behalf by Peter Ruh of Ohio in 1991. It is a large size plant which grows to about 20 inches in height with a spread of around 58 inches. The foliage is yellow with a bluish bloom in the spring but changes to bright gold by the end of the summer. Its leaves are slightly rippled and twisted at the tip. Very pale purple flowers bloom from late June into July.

There could be some confusion of names here. According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "The plant, once known as "Lucy's 36-69", "Lucy's Breeder 36-69", and 'Butterfly', was utilized by Lucille Simpers in her hybridizing program." In 2012, a different hosta was registered as 'Butterfly' and that, of course, makes it the official plant of that name.
