Hosta 'Little Black Scape'

The label on this plant incorrectly called it 'Little Blackscape'.

Listed as a hybrid of H. 'Sum and Substance', this plant was registered by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina in 1995. It grows to a medium size about 10 to 15 inches in height with narrowly ovate, slightly wavy leaves. The pale purple flowers which have very dark purple scapes, bloom from late July.

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Grow in morning sun to enhance the leaf and scape color...unusual color combination of chartreuse-yellow leaves, dusky scapes, and violet flower buds."

In an article about hybridizing by Tony Avent in The Hosta Journal (1996 Vol. 27 No. 1),  Tony gives the following comments on cultivars he has introduced: "H. 'Little Black Scape' - unique seedling from H. 'Sum and Substance'. Leaves emerge green, but change to gold about the time that the nearly jet black scape emerges...very dramatic...not released yet...hopefully soon."
