According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "...same as 'Hime
Karafuto'...registered as a translation of 'Hime Karafuto', a Japanese name...'Princess of Karafuto' has been generally
accepted."
This
Hosta
sieboldii type of
plant originated in
Japan. It forms a small size plant that grows to
one foot tall and 26 inches wide with slightly wavy, smooth
textured foliage. The purple flowers bloom in August.
"Hime
Karafuto Gibōshi, the "small hosta from Karafuto," is found in the Karafuto
area of Hokkaido and is similar if not identical to H. 'Ginko Craig'. Its
Japanese name has been incorrectly translated to H. 'Princess of
Karafuto'...and so this taxon is also cultivated under the latter name."
Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled,
A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term hime as small, mini, dwarf or princess.
