Hosta 'Goddess of Athena'

Introduced by Bob Kuk of Kuk's Forest in Ohio in 1987, this cultivar is a chartreuse margined version of H. 'Decorata' (self-pollinated seedling). It is a medium size (16 inches high by 30 inches wide) plant with dark green leaves that have chartreuse margins that change color during the season. The bell-shaped, purple flowers are fertile and borne on 28 inch scapes in late summer followed by viable seeds.

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Superb for woodland planting or ground cover as it increases fairly rapidly...Leaf margin is creamier than its parent. Plant is more rhizomatous than most hostas."

In Greek mythology, Athena was the god of wisdom, warfare, heroism and reason.
