This cultivar is a hybrid of ((H. 'Sagae ’
× H. 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa ’)
× (H. 'Sun Power ’ × H. 'Gold
Regal ’)) × (H. 'Sagae’ × H. 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa’) which was registered
by Olga Petryszyn of Indiana in 2009. It is a giant size (28 inches high by 48 inches wide), upright hosta with
medium blue-green foliage. The leaves are shiny on top, nearly round, slightly
wavy and moderately corrugated with thick substance. Pure white, bell-shaped
flowers bloom in July in Indiana. It sets viable seeds. |
The registered name is "Gitchigumi" while the
reference is probably to the poem, "The Song of Hiawatha" by
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It comes from the line in the poem
that reads, "By the shores of Gitche Gumee".
Gitchigoomee is the Ojibwa (Chippewa) word for Lake Superior. There are many online references which spell it "Gitchigoomie".
A bit confusing...
