According to
The Hostapedia by
Mark Zilis (2009), this non-registered cultivar was found "...near Mt.
Fuji by
Kenji Watanabe, Gotemba Nursery, Gotemba City,
Japan "
It forms a medium size (18 inches high by 48 inches wide) mound of
bright green foliage that is
smooth-textured, has a wavy margin and a thin tip. Perhaps its
most distinctive trait is the light purple, double (hose in hose
type) flowers produced from late July into August.
Zilis (2009) goes on to say, "...'Fujibotan' is a must for any
hosta collector. It forms a very attractive mound of clear,
deeply veined foliage, and its show of double flowers is simply
spectacular...Though it is listed as a
H. montana
type, it shows evidence of being a hybrid, possibly with
H. sieboldii..."
From the
Field Guide to Hostas by Mark Zilis (2014), "This may be the best double-flowered hosta cultivar in existence,
in the sense that it is the most consistent double."
The
Hosta Journal, (2006 Vol. 37 No. 2), contained an
article in which several
hostaphiles were asked to give a brief list of their
favorite hosta
flowers. This plant was included in that list.
