Registered by
Liberty Hyde Bailey of Michigan and
The American Hosta Society in
1987, this
cultivar is of unknown origination and unidentified
parentage but it assumed that H. 'Fortunei'
is in its genetic background.
This is a large size hosta about 25 inches
high by 48 inches wide with dark green
foliage. It bears lavender flowers on scapes
about 40 inches tall.
According to
The Hostapedia by
Mark Zilis (2009),
"The name H. fortunei 'Aoki' was registered by the AHS
in 1987 for leaf show purposes (Eisel 1988,
p. 60). When Hosta fortunei was no
longer recognized as a species (Schmid 1991,
p.50), the name H. 'Fortunei
Aoki' was proposed for this plant (ibid,
pp. 51 & 159). This was an awkward
combination of a Latin specific epithet (fortunei)
and a fancy name (Aoki). Instead, H. 'Aoki'
makes more sense as a stand-alone name."
