Hosta 'Elephant Burgers'

This cultivar of unidentified parentage was registered by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina in 1993. It forms a medium size mound one foot tall and 29 inches wide. The leaves have a slightly wavy margin. Pale purple flowers bloom in June.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "The greatest interest surrounding this cultivar concerns its unusual name. In the garden, it becomes  a plain green mound of foliage."

In an article about hybridizing by Tony Avent in The Hosta Journal (1996 Vol. 27 No. 1),  Tony gives the following comments on cultivars he has introduced: "H. 'Elephant Burger' - op (open-pollinated) seedling of unknown parent from a hosta that I found in an old garden...uniquely corrugated foliage...introduced as a breeder only...makes great offspring when used as a pollen parent to put leaf corrugation in fast growing smaller hostas."
