This is a second generation
Tardiana-type
seedling that was registered by the
British Hosta and
Hemerocallis Society on behalf of the originator,
Eric Smith in 1988. The
large size, 20
inch high mound spreads to a width of 42 inches. The foliage has
thick substance, is slightly wavy and broadly ovate. Its pale
bluish lavender flowers bloom from mid-August into September.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "Though not as widely grown as
most other Tardianas, 'Curlew' certainly can be considered one
of the best for rich foliage color, thick substance, and good
flower performance."
A curlew is a long-beaked shore bird.
