Hosta 'Bubba'

This cultivar is a seedling of H. 'Sum and Substance' which was registered by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina in 1998. It grows into a large size hosta about 20 inches high and 44 inches wide. Pale purple, bell shape flowers bloom in July but it does not set seed.

The New Encyclopedia of Hostas by Diana Grenfell (2009) states: "Site in bright light to moderate shade. Grow with glaucous blue-leaved hostas to set off the exceptionally lustrous leaf surface. Moderate growth rate."

In an article about hybridizing by Tony Avent in The Hosta Journal (1996 Vol. 27 No. 1),  Tony gives the following comments on cultivars he has introduced: "H. 'Bubba' - fascinating op (open-pollinated) H. 'Sum and Substance' seedling...very glossy leaves...bright red neck...unique. Only drawback is sterility...probably due to abundance of steroids as a child!"
