A sport of H. 'Sum and
Substance', this cultivar was registered in 1999 by
Alex Malloy but was originated by
Allen
C. Haskell of Massachusetts. Of course, this is a large
plant growing up to 25 inches in height and spreading to 5 feet
or more. From late July into August, it bears pale lavender flowers.
This was named for the
son in the
Allen C. Haskell & Son Horticulturists nursery in
New Bedford, Massachusetts.
An article by Warren I. Pollock in
The
Hosta Journal (1996 Vol. 27 No. 2) states that, "I wrote
about the exciting new sport of 'Sum and Substance' named 'Lady Isobel
Barnett'...The leaves are thick, glossy dark green with an irregular narrow
creamy-yellow margin." Pollock went on to identify other 'Sum and Substance'
sports with similar leaf colors including H. 'David A. Haskell' and H. 'Sum
Total'.
