4 to
5 feet in height and width and may get a bit larger
under certain circumstances. Slow growing.
Flowers have a pinkish tinge in
bud and open to white. They
appear very early in the spring (late April) before the
leaves. Because of its sweet fragrance similar
to
Daphne odora.
Opposite, simple, broad-ovate to
elliptic, 1 to 4” long, 3/4 to 2 1/2” wide.
Dull, dark green in color with pubescence on the
bottom side.
Reddish to wine colored.
Red changing to blue-black drupe
'Carlotta' - Larger leaves with a broadly
ovate form to the shrub.
'Cayuga' - Flowers abundantly with
compact growth habit.
'Compactum' - Much lower in height and
blooms well.
