Erect, sparsely branched
3-5 feet tall and 3 feet wide
The yellow pealike flowers are borne in dense, terminal racemes, which are 8-12 inches long. The flowers look like a yellow lupine, hence the common name, Carolina lupine.
Late spring to early summer
The alternate leaves are palmately compound with 3 leaflets. Leaflets are ovate or obovate, 2-3 inches long, pubescent and glaucous on the lower leaf surface.
 
 
 
 
Thermopsis is derived from thermos, a lupin and opsis, a resemblance, referring to the similarity of the flower of Lupinus and Thermopsis.
