Pyramidal when young, becoming open and spreading with age, with a tapering trunk and a buttressed base.
50-70 feet tall with a spread of 20-30 feet
Plants are monoecious. The staminate cones are in drooping panicles.
 
Needles are deciduous, alternate and spirally arranged on the stems, ⅓-¾ inch long, yellowish-green in color.
Fall color is a russet or soft brown.
 
Stems are of 2 kinds - persistent and deciduous. Persistent stems are green the first year, becoming brown during the winter, carrying the deciduous laterals, which are green in color.
Cones are short-stalked, globular, 1 inch across, purple and resinous when young.

  • 'Pendens' - Pyramidal form.
