Needles are deciduous, alternate and spirally
arranged on the stems, ⅓-¾ inch long,
yellowish-green in color. |

Fall color is a russet or soft brown. |

Stems are of 2 kinds - persistent and deciduous.
Persistent stems are green the first year,
becoming brown during the winter, carrying the
deciduous laterals, which are green in color. |

Cones are short-stalked, globular, 1 inch
across, purple and resinous when young. |
