The bright yellow
flowers are 2 inches wide, have 4 petals, 2
sepals and many stamens. There are usually 2,
sometimes 4, flowers found in terminal clusters. |

Basal leaves are
usually grouped in twos, sometimes 1 or
3. Leaves are 9-12 inches long, has a long petiole,
pinnately lobed into 5-7 lobes with lobed
margins. Leaves have an oak leaf-like
appearance. Lower leaf surface is glaucous.
Stems and leaves contain a bright yellow sap.

Stylophorum is derived from
the Greek, stylos, a style and phoreo. to bear and may refer to the style being retained on the
seed capsule. The yellow sap was used as a dye
by American Indians. |
