Leaves are alternate, simple, 1-3½ inches
long, elliptic, both ends tapered, remotely and
finely toothed, dark green in color. |

Fall color is a beautiful orange to scarlet. |

Bark is reddish, mottled, smooth, peeling off in
large flakes. Exfoliating bark is quite
ornamental. |

Fruit is a 5 angled, woody, hairy capsule, about
¾ inch long. |
