Upright, heavily branched, suckering shrub or small tree, often wide-spreading.
10-15 feet tall with a spread of 10-12 feet
Flowers are greenish-white, bell-shaped, borne on nodding panicles, not especially showy.
April-May
Leaves are opposite, pinnately compound with 3 leaflets, each being 1˝-3 inches long, with an acuminate apex and sharply serrate margins.
Fall color is a dull, pale yellow.
 
Bark is light greenish-gray, smooth, with horizontal, whitish stripes
Fruit is an inflated, 3 lobed capsule, pale green changing to light brown, ripening in September
