A large shrub or small tree with a narrow, bushy habit and upright branches.
15-25 feet tall with a spread of 12-15 feet
Plants are dioecious. Flowers are in catkins the males to 1½ inches long, covered with dense, silvery hair, the female growing to 2½ inches long, in early spring.
 
Leaves are alternate, simple, 2-4 inches long, broadly elliptic to oblong, irregular and slightly toothed to entire, wrinkled, dark green in color, with a grayish pubescence on the underside.
Fall color is nonexistent to greenish-yellow.
Buds are ¼ -½ inch long, purplish brown, with a single, cap-like scale.
 
Fruit is a hairy capsule and not showy.
