Numerous small
white flowers are borne in a slightly nodding
panicle that rises well above the leaves. The
flowers are similar to those of Astilbe.
The leaves arise
from thick rhizomes on petioles 2-3 feet long.
Leaves are peltate, meaning the petiole attaches
to the center of the leaf. Unlike other
Rodgersia, this species has round,
shield-like leaves rather than compound leaves.
Each leaf can be up to 3 feet wide and it has an
undulating lobing pattern with
numerous small teeth on the margin. The leaf surface
has a texture like very fine sandpaper.
