polygamo-dioecious. Flowers are
yellowish, borne in 1 inch long male catkins, or
the females in a short terminal panicle, in mid
to late March. |

Stems are
slender, pubescent, emitting a distinct spicy
fragrance when bruised. |

Low,
irregular spreading shrub, usually prostrate
with ascending branches. |

Fruit is a
red, hairy drupe, ¼ inch in diameter, ripening
in August- September and briefly persisting. |

Fall color
is orange to reddish-purple. |
